Free Range, Pastured Poultry
We raise our chickens on pasture. The chickens are able to peck around at green grass, forbs, legumes, and bugs. They can run and flap their wings and have access to sunshine and fresh air. We continue to experiment with our management styles, and after having used a floorless, portable pen which we moved a couple times a day, we've decided to now only use the pens as shelters for the birds during inclement weather and as protection against predators at night. During the day the chickens are free to come and go from the shelters. The regular rotation to fresh pasture enhances the health of the chicken while they provide the soil with high quality fertilizer. We provide the chickens with all natural, certified non-GMO feeds fortified with the highest quality vitamins and minerals and antibiotic free. The chickens grow beautifully and live a respected life.
We raise a breed of chicken called Red Ranger. This breed, which was developed by a couple in Alabama, exhibit great meat-bird characteristics while being less predisposed to many of the health and handling issues associated with the typical broiler chicken breed.
We currently sell whole chickens off our farm, at various St. Louis area farmers' markets, and through our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm partners (see below) from spring through fall.
We also offer discounts for those who wish to purchase chickens in quantity. Spend $400 or more on chickens at one time and receive a 15% discount on your entire purchase. To give you an idea, this is approximately 25 – 4 lb. chickens (the chickens do vary in size from 3-5 lbs.). That gives you enough to have a chicken almost once a week for half the year. Approximately 26 chickens will fit in a 7 cubic ft. chest freezer. If you would like to place a bulk order please fill out the order form and send it in with the appropriate deposit.
