Pastured Laying Hens
Eggs have often been referred to as "Nature's Perfect Food," and they are, or are at least close, when the hens are raised outdoors, on pasture, with access to biodynamically grown grains harvested here on our farm and no genetically modified grains or legumes. The hens are part of the pasture rotation as well. They often follow behind the cattle or pigs where they are free to peck and move around foraging and scratching as they desire. Their mobile chicken coop is the mode of transportation from one spot to another. The mobile coop provides protection from predators at night, a place to roost, and nesting boxes for laying their eggs. We move the mobile coop regularly so the hens have access to the shortened forages the cows and pigs leave behind and can help sanitize the pastures of any parasites left by the other species of animals. The hens also consume grains and legumes grown on the farm and from other local farmers through specially formulated diets which we mix on the farm.
We offer Live Springs Farm "Country Eggs” through our farm partner CSAs, St. Louis area farmers' markets, and off our farm. Check our price list for product information.
